How good are you at Teamwork?

Did you know that Teamwork is a competency that you can develop? We define the Teamwork competency as, "Cooperating with others to meet objectives." Who do you know who is highly skilled at Teamwork?

With practice, you can grow and develop this skill just like other "hard skills" you might be good at like cooking, public speaking, employee coaching, or playing golf.

How do I grow as a leader: Teamwork?

Those with a highly developed skill of Teamwork exhibit the following:

  • Respects team members and their individual perspectives.
  • Makes team objectives a priority.
  • Works toward consensus when team decisions are required.
  • Meets agreed-upon deadlines on team assignments and commitments.
  • Shares responsibility with team members for successes and failures.
  • Keeps team members informed regarding projects.
  • Supports team decisions.
  • Recognizes and appreciates the contributions of team members.
  • Behaves in a manner consistent with team values and mission.
  • Provides constructive feedback to team members.
  • Responds positively to feedback from team members.
  • Raises and/or confronts issues limiting team effectiveness.

Behaviorally, it comes more naturally and requires less focus for some of us to excel at teamwork. For the rest of us, it is a skill we may need to invest energy into developing in order to be more effective. Our Driving Forces will reward for some skills and not others. If your job or your environment demands something from you that isn't naturally present in your Behaviors or Driving Forces, you can develop it in your Competencies.
